Located along U.S. Highway 12 and 83 with a population of over 642 sits the friendly little town of Selby nestled between rich farmlands. With brush-filled grasslands (which provide excellent habitat for pheasants, waterfowl, and deer) the land surrounding this town offers some of the best hunting opportunities available. In addition, other types of hunting abound include prairie dog, fox, raccoon, badger, coyote, and skunk. For the avid fisherman access to Lake Oahe and other water hotspots are located only a short drive away. During hunting season you will find businesses that provide full-service dining, overnight lodging, groceries, bait and tackle, fuel, convenience, and hotels to fulfill your every hunting need. Lake Hiddenwood State Park is just a few miles northeast of town and it offers fishing, boating, swimming, hiking trails and camping opportunities. The Selby City park has a lot to offer for both an outdoorsman and an athlete. It is composed of a softball field, a baseball/football field, a tennis court, a sand volleyball court, rodeo grounds, two playground areas and a swimming pool. Additionally the park offers free overnight camping and is equipped with restrooms, and multiple picnic areas. Join the many men’s or women’s tournaments sponsored by the league at the May Acres, a challenging 9-hole golf course, on the south side of town. On the eve of the opening day of pheasant season the May Acres Clubhouse sponsors a steak feed. Selby, also the County seat, is home to the Walworth County Veteran’s Memorial. Built in 2002, these black granite tablets are a true testament to the pride and patriotism of 1,388 veterans whose names are engraved upon them. They include veterans from all branches of the military who call or called Walworth County home. The memorial is illuminated for night viewing. It proudly stands on the grounds of the Walworth County Courthouse which was built in 1913. It is listed on the South Dakota and National List of Historic Places. You can also find the Walworth County Extension Office, this program has taken great strides in the development of better methods of farming and the education of rural people in the U.S. The Walworth County Extension uses all of the resources of the South Dakota Cooperative Extension Service to provide expertise in areas such as agronomy, livestock, family and consumer sciences, 4-H/youth development, horticulture, and farm business management. The town has the distinct honor of having the only father/son governors elected to the great State of South Dakota. George T. Mickelson served as the 18th Governor and his son, George S. Mickelson, served as the state’s 28th Governor. On the highway north of town is a dedicatory plaque to two South Dakota Governors - Governor George T. and his son George S. Mickelson, both from Selby. Selby is also home to the largest in-land fertilizer plant in the upper Midwest at Northern Plains Co-op, Inc. The railroad still serves the community well. Although not bringing passengers in, it now ships out five to six million bushels of grain a year (wheat, corn, soybeans, and sunflowers). This is farming country ! Selby is the proud home to five churches, a nursing home and a Senior & Nutrition Site. The Opera House hosts many functions during the year including the Harvest Craft Fair, Turkey Shoot, Christmas Tree Festival, Boy Scout Breakfast and many more events.
